Meet the Team: Oliver Cock

This week's meet the team feature's Oli Cock, our Executive Director of Procurement Services. Oli tells us about his greatest achievements, how he got into Procurement and what makes him happiest.

Name: Oli Cock

Role: Executive Director – Procurement Services

Location: Good question? Europe – more specifically UK

How long have you been working in your field?

More than 30 years!

What do you think are the best skills that you bring to your role?

I think I am good at creating and leading successful teams. I’m inquisitive so I like to learn and ask questions to get at why people/organisations do things. I’ve worked in many industries and been both on the sales/client facing side as well as the Procurement side, so I understand the challenges they face and how to create value for both. And ultimately, I think I’m good at creating an environment that allows people to bring out their best and fulfil their potential.

What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do/your greatest professional achievement?

I’m still in gainful employment! If I look at my last two roles, then as MD of Brand Deployment we were able to improve our profitability significantly last year and are on track to do the same this year, despite everything that Covid has thrown at us. As MD of Foodbuy I took an underperforming function, one that was mistrusted by its stakeholders and its suppliers, and led it to an award-winning business that delivered its stretch targets 8 years in a row, and importantly gained a reputation for doing things the right way at the same time.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about you (and/or your company)? About me, its that I’m passionate about doing things the right way, and adding value, and it’s the same for Communisis. If we aren’t adding value we shouldn’t be doing it. On a personal level I am an Ambassador for an amazing charity called Duchenne UK that is a parent-led charity fighting to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. For the past 5 years I’ve supported them in their annual Duchenne Dash cycling challenge, and 2020 saw Communisis get involved for the first time…..and hopefully not the last!

Tell me why you decided on your career. Why not something else?

I didn’t decide on this as a career. When I left University I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I decided to look for an organization that did something positive and whose values I believed in, which led to me joining the NHS (National Health Service). They offered me the chance to specialize in Procurement and to fund me to do my professional Purchasing qualifications so I thought why not? 30 plus years later…………It was the best decision I ever made!

What are you happiest doing, when you’re not working?

Walking on a beach with my wife or reading a book with a glass of good red wine.

Tell us one random fact about you that most people won’t know

I have performed on stage in a couple of musicals including singing a solo!
